Overview
Kost is Orenne Highridge’s longtime bear companion. Their bond began in remote Dun Morogh, where they occupied neighboring or overlapping territory. Tolerance gradually became familiarity, cooperation, attachment, and finally a mature hunter-companion partnership.
Kost is an exceptionally intelligent individual bear, with unusual memory, judgment, recognition, inference, problem-solving ability, and understanding of Orenne’s intentions. That intelligence is natural rather than the product of training. Orenne has trained him and can direct or call him off, but their partnership depends upon trust and mutual understanding rather than domination. Kost can remain calm in settlements because he distinguishes unfamiliarity from hostility, while Orenne’s presence makes clear to other dwarves that the bear is a companion rather than a wild threat.
