Overview

Monli is a centuries-old Bronzebeard dwarf, antiquarian, prospector, and Brewmaster monk of the Alliance. His life is distinct from Aibhinger’s and has not been established as another temporal divergence of it. Long before archaeology became a formal dwarven profession, Monli ranged through the Eastern Kingdoms and other accessible lands as a ruin-delver and traveler. When that work became institutionalized, he was among the early members of the Explorers’ League.

Kalimdor became newly compelling after the Third War opened it broadly to Alliance travel. Monli eventually joined the archaeological presence at Bael Modan, working in the expedition associated with Prospector Khazgorm. The settlement became one of the first places in his long life where he stopped wandering and remained for years.

Bael Modan and Theramore

Monli survived the destruction of Bael’dun Keep. Among the displaced dwarves, he became the community’s informal elder: not by military or governmental rank, but by age, composure, competence, and the trust of people who needed someone to arrange shelter, food, movement, disputes, grief, and the next decision. He led the survivors toward Theramore, with Aibhinger serving as their military escort and protector.

Theramore became the new home of a visible Bael Modan refugee contingent. When the Horde later threatened the city, warning allowed civilians to leave before the expected conventional assault. Many of the dwarves refused to flee again and remained as defenders. Monli escorted vulnerable civilians away because someone had to see them to safety and expected to return. The mana bomb made that return impossible. The defenders from Bael Modan died with Theramore.

Monli’s survival was not a fortunate absence. He was outside the city because he was performing the same protective duty that had first kept him with the Bael Modan refugees. The destruction of his first home and then of the community he had rebuilt gives him deep cause to hate the Horde, but not to erase the individuality of every person within it.

The Monk’s Discipline

Monli has fought enemies and witnessed atrocities without allowing banners or racial categories to exhaust his judgment of another person. His long life matters to that discipline. Orcs occupy only a relatively recent part of his memory, while his travels had already taught him that neither trolls nor any other people were a single moral category. He is neither naive about war nor blind to culpability; he simply refuses to make collective hatred his substitute for judgment.

Pandaren monastic teaching gave form to qualities Monli had been developing for centuries: composure, restraint, service, self-command, patience, and moral steadiness. He became an unusually old novice after Theramore’s destruction, when Wandering Isle pandaren had begun bringing their disciplines into the Alliance. His path was not an attempt to escape grief. It was the deliberate refinement of an older character. Brewmaster practice came naturally to a dwarf familiar with drink and brewing, though he had not needed to be a professional brewer before taking it up.
