Overview
Bael Modan is an active Ironforge dwarven base in the Southern Barrens, consisting of an excavation and the fortress of Bael’dun Keep. Beneath it lies an ancient Titan complex and research facility. The settlement’s work belonged to the Bael’dun expedition, whose scientific branch served the excavation under Prospector Khazgorm while General Twinbraid’s military branch secured the sites and fought intruders.
The settlement was built in land previously inhabited by the Stonespire tauren. Its excavation and fortification displaced that community, leaving a grievance that shaped Gann Stonespire’s later attack. Bael Modan also established the separate Bael’dun Digsite in Mulgore.
The Destruction of Bael’dun Keep
During the Cataclysm campaign, Gellix and Weezil Slipshadow sabotaged an artillery shell within Bael’dun Keep. The explosion killed Weezil, Marley Twinbraid, and many of the fortress’s dwarven defenders and workers. Cogblast, sent by General Twinbraid to check on the expedition, survived the blast while escorting Marley in a separate flying machine and helped rescue survivors. The destruction of the keep devastated the community, but did not erase Bael Modan itself; the site remained active and was later again used by Alliance forces during the Fourth War.
The keep’s destruction displaced a substantial part of the settlement’s community. Monli became its informal civilian leader and led the refugees to Theramore, with Aibhinger serving as military escort. General Twinbraid’s later retaliation against the nearby Bilgewater mine rested on the correct conclusion that a goblin had been involved, but the mistaken belief that the Bilgewater workers had carried out the attack.
