Overview

Ani’dael Highbough, known to friends and family as Dael, is a quel’dorei ranger and Marksmanship Hunter. He was among the dissenters expelled from Silvermoon after the Third War and settled at Quel’Lithien Lodge, where he loved the other exiles deeply while refusing the isolation that defined much of their survival. His opposition to Grand Magister Rommath’s imported magical policies became a lasting personal animosity, and his distrust of Kael’thas Sunstrider preceded the full revelation of Kael’thas’s betrayal.

Outland and the Sunwell

Dael carried that conflict outward. In Outland he became a major independent ally of the Scryers, fought extensively against Kael’thas and the Sunfury, and entered the wider coalition of the Shattered Sun Offensive. During the campaign for the Sunwell and Quel’Danas, he came to wield Thori’dal, the Stars’ Fury, which fires bolts of Sunwell energy rather than physical arrows.

Thori’dal and the Silver Covenant

After the Sunwell’s restoration, Silvermoon demanded that Dael surrender Thori’dal. The state offered to acknowledge Rommath’s policy failure and end the Quel’Lithien exile only if its dissenters acknowledged their offense against lawful authority. Dael and the lodge rejected the bargain. Silvermoon continued to regard him as an exile and outsider incapable of retaining such a significant Thalassian artifact; his refusal made his quel’dorei separatism and identitarianism permanent. He rejects the premise that the Sin’dorei state holds exclusive authority over Thalassian identity, history, or inheritance.

Dael’s service later brought him into the Silver Covenant and the attention of Vereesa Windrunner. He represented the Covenant through the Argent Tournament’s representative, valiant, and champion progression and became a major champion through the Icecrown campaign. His later association with Argent Crusade gear and tabards reflects that earned standing rather than an original allegiance.

Ellaria and Quel’Danil

In early Cataclysm, Dael was away when Hawkspear discovered the artifact that corrupted Quel’Lithien. His sister Ellaria, his sole living blood relative, wrote to him through the lodge’s roughly two-month collapse; her letters grew increasingly alarming. He returned too late to prevent the disaster and found Ellaria transformed into one of the Wretched. For roughly six more months he concealed and cared for her around the ruined lodge, refusing to accept that she was gone and nearly losing himself to grief and delusional hope.

When a traveling group sheltered at the ruins, its young Highvale daughter had already spent several days in Dael’s care after becoming separated from her family. She reminded him of Ellaria as a child and had secretly visited the Wretched woman. When an adult discovered the hidden prisoner, Dael put himself between them and tried to defend his sister; the conflict agitated Ellaria, who seized the child while Dael’s back was turned. His ranger reflexes acted before he could accept what he was seeing: he raised Thori’dal and killed his sister with a bolt of Sunwell energy. The travelers brought the shattered ranger to Quel’Danil Lodge, where the Highvale community cared for him until he could speak and later return to duty. Quel’Danil became his home only after that loss. He is a Quel’Lithien survivor adopted into the Highvale community, not a lifelong Highvale elf.

Ren’dorei Alliance

Dael later aligned politically with Ren’dorei, recognizing something of his own history in elves expelled over forbidden magical research. He remains a High Elf and does not embrace Void transformation, but he is willing to use controlled Void-infused arms and equipment when he judges their use safe.

Relationships

  • Ellaria Highbough - Dael’s younger sister and sole living blood relative until the fall of Quel’Lithien. Her transformation into a Wretched and the necessity of killing her remain the defining wound of his life.
  • Kirkian Dawnshield - Ellaria’s lover or spouse; his grief over “my Ellaria” is bound to that relationship.
  • Alleria Windrunner - political ally after Dael’s alignment with the Ren’dorei.
  • Vereesa Windrunner - Dael’s Outland and Sunwell service brought him to her attention and into the Silver Covenant’s orbit.
  • Grand Magister Rommath - enduring personal enemy whose magical policies Dael opposed from the beginning.
  • Kael’thas Sunstrider - Dael distrusted him before the full revelation of his betrayal and fought his Sunfury forces in Outland.
  • Highvale Elves - the community that sheltered Dael after Ellaria’s death and became his adopted people.
  • Ren’dorei - political allies; Dael supports their place among the Thalassian people without becoming Void-touched himself.

Affiliations

Timeline

  • After the Third War - Opposes Rommath’s imported magical policies; is exiled from Silvermoon with the dissenters who settle at Quel’Lithien Lodge.
  • Burning Crusade - Travels to Outland as an independent ally of the Scryers, fights Kael’thas and the Sunfury, and joins the wider Shattered Sun effort.
  • Sunwell campaign - Wields Thori’dal, the Stars’ Fury during the campaign for Quel’Danas and the Sunwell.
  • After the Sunwell’s restoration - Refuses Silvermoon’s demand to surrender Thori’dal and rejects reconciliation conditioned on the Quel’Lithien exiles admitting wrongdoing.
  • Wrath - Aligns with the Silver Covenant and completes the Argent Tournament’s representative, valiant, and champion progression.
  • Early Cataclysm - Is absent when Hawkspear’s artifact begins Quel’Lithien’s collapse; Ellaria’s correspondence brings him home after roughly two months, too late to save the lodge.
  • Roughly six months later - Kills the Wretched Ellaria with Thori’dal while saving a Highvale child.
  • About one year after the artifact’s discovery - Begins returning to active duty after weeks of near-muteness and recovery at Quel’Danil Lodge.

Hooks

  • Define the exact nature of Dael’s original dissent from Silvermoon beyond his opposition to Rommath’s magical policies.
  • Determine whether Ellaria’s surviving correspondence is preserved and who, if anyone, knows its full contents.
  • Establish the degree to which Kirkian Dawnshield remains part of Dael’s life after Quel’Lithien’s fall.
  • Define the exact circumstances under which Dael formalizes, or declines to formalize, his relationship with the Silver Covenant.
  • Explore the limits Dael sets for his use of Void-infused equipment and what would convince him that a particular artifact is unsafe.

Notes

  • Ani’dael stands in for Alyssia Moonstalker during the Argent Tournament.
