Overview
The Thousand Needles oil-field dispute was the Speedbarge competition over temporary access to the centaur oil pools around Splithoof Heights. It followed the evacuation of New Thalanaar, when Cogblast and Tinks reached Fizzle & Pozzik’s Speedbarge from the Alliance side and Gellix arrived through the Horde route.
The Speedbarge’s Alliance and Horde engineers first attempted negotiation. Gellix handled the Horde pyrite and fake-gold scheme, while Corvo and Tinks pursued the Alliance objective involving the Ancient Brazier and its sacred flame. Corvo and Tinks discovered enough to suspect that the Horde’s offered gold was fraudulent and attempted to warn the centaurs. It made no difference. The centaurs were unwilling to grant either faction the oil rights it wanted, and both delegations returned to the barge claiming that the other side had failed more completely.
Neither side then secured the field or a permanent concession. Instead, each deployed a drilling rig, defended it long enough to take a barrel of crude, and returned the oil to the Speedbarge. The Alliance operation belonged to Corvo and Tinks; Gellix served with the Horde crew. Both sides could therefore claim success while neither gained exclusive control of the resource.
The rigs stood near enough for each crew to see the other, exchange insults, and take occasional opportunistic nuisance shots. They were far enough apart that ordinary small-arms fire was unlikely to decide the work. More importantly, everyone understood that heavy explosives, serious fire, or attempts to destroy either rig could ignite the field, ruin the oil both sides wanted, and kill the crews. Centaur attacks consumed most of the available attention. The result was a tense factional competition rather than an open Alliance-Horde battle.
Corvo and Gellix recognized one another during the operation. Corvo’s hatred of Gellix was already personal because of Bael’dun Keep, but he would not compromise the drill, the oil field, or the lives under his responsibility merely to shoot one enemy engineer. Tinks remained openly hostile as well, though his later life brought him into contact with Gellix more often in neutral commercial and engineering centers. Gellix recognized both gnomes as dangerous recurring opponents, not merely anonymous Alliance personnel.
