Overview

Orenne Olafsson is an Engineer of Clan Ironplough, or Angfluk, raised in a small farming hamlet in the Grey Mountains. His education took him from the modest machinery of a provincial community to the great workshops of Zhufbar, and eventually to the reclamation of Ekrund.

At approximately ninety-five, he has qualifications, professional accomplishments, and a sound reputation, while remaining comparatively young by Dwarf standards. Ekrund offers the chance to help build the enduring achievement toward which his ambition has grown.

Personality

Orenne is practical and inventive, with an interest in firearms, artillery, machinery, explosives, and the demands of battlefield engineering. He likes solutions that can be built and made to work, preferably with gunpowder.

His ambition joins pride in craftsmanship with a desire for recognition. He wants to produce work that will last and matter, and has sufficient ability to take that prospect seriously. The achievements of great Engineers have enlarged the scale of what he hopes to accomplish.

History

The Grey Mountains

His native hamlet consists of only a handful of Dwarf families near the Bretonnian frontier. Long contact with neighbouring human settlements has affected some local customs. His father, Olaf, bears a traditional Dwarf name, while Orenne’s reflects a newer naming fashion influenced by Bretonnian neighbours.

The family belongs to the agricultural community. Orenne’s interest in engineering developed through the hamlet’s single elderly Engineer, who maintained its limited machinery and performed specialized repairs. Recognizing the boy’s aptitude, the old Dwarf taught him basic mechanical principles and practical work.

His mentor’s death interrupted that education. The farming community could continue most of its ordinary work without a resident specialist, but Orenne lost both a teacher and access to further instruction.

Independent Study

He spent years gathering whatever technical material he could obtain: manuals, diagrams, schematics, workshop records, and other fragments of knowledge. He guarded the small collection possessively and studied it with enough aptitude to acquire an unusually sophisticated theoretical understanding.

By the time he left home, his mathematics and theory stood well above average. His opportunities for practice had been much narrower. Simple agricultural equipment, hand-operated mechanisms, and routine repairs could teach him only so much about machinery more elaborate than anything in the hamlet.

Zhufbar

At approximately thirty, Orenne left for formal engineering education in Zhufbar. Years as the most technically knowledgeable person in his community had given him considerable confidence, much of it justified.

Zhufbar humbled him through scale. Enormous waterwheels, vast workshops, and monumental machinery brought him face to face with achievements far beyond anything he had seen. He knew enough to understand their sophistication, which made the encounter all the more powerful. Becoming a qualified Engineer suddenly seemed the beginning of his ambition rather than its fulfilment.

Apprenticeship gave him the practical experience and judgment his independent study had lacked. He learned to apply his theoretical abilities to sophisticated machinery and large industrial works. By the reclamation of Ekrund, he had already acquired a reputation for competence and accomplishments of his own.

Ekrund

After passing ninety, he joined the reclamation as a professional Engineer. The need to restore mines, machinery, fortifications, infrastructure, and military defenses presented both a technical challenge and an opportunity of unusual scope.

Working alongside other Engineers and craftsmen, Orenne could help create something historically meaningful. Ekrund promised the possibility of a defining achievement, built through his own generation’s labour rather than inherited for maintenance.

He stayed after the initial reclamation to continue rebuilding and tend the infrastructure. When the renewed Greenskin offensive began, the settlement was already bound to him through substantial work. Defending it meant preserving what he had helped accomplish and the future work he still hoped to complete.

Relationships

Olaf is his father, and the elderly Engineer of the hamlet was his first teacher. His later work in Ekrund places him alongside Varell, whose attachment to the hold is ancestral. Their involvement in the same resettlement gives them a common professional setting.
