Overview
Varell Valeksson is a Runepriest of Clan Helhein, born in Karak Izor and now resident in reclaimed Ekrund. At approximately 350 years old, his Great Beard distinction carries considerable respect among the Dawi. He took part in the recovery of his clan’s original homeland and remains to defend it against the renewed Greenskin offensive.
Personality
Varell’s learning is rooted in ancestry and tradition. He regards runecraft as knowledge preserved through disciplined practice, and distrusts the uncontrolled or ostentatious magic favoured by others. Centuries of life have strengthened his conservative temperament without making age itself the centre of his daily concerns.
The possibility of becoming a Living Ancestor does occasionally unsettle him. For most of his life, those who had reached the traditional four-hundred-year threshold seemed figures of almost unimaginable antiquity. Now the distinction is close enough that he may live to attain it.
Younger Dwarfs sometimes raise the prospect with admiration, while the oldest can acknowledge it with understanding or dry humour. Varell dismisses it aloud as a concern for another day, yet the remarks can leave him quietly contemplative. His work continues as before, with no preparations for an elevation that still lies in the future.
History
Clan Helhein
The Helhein participated in the founding and settlement of Ekrund in the Dragonback Mountains. Its ancient fall drove survivors to Karak Eight Peaks; the later loss of that hold dispersed them again. One branch eventually settled in Karak Izor, where Varell, the son of Valek, was born and spent much of his life.
Those losses belong to the history inherited from his ancestors. He grew up long afterward, carrying the memory of places his clan had been forced to abandon.
Return to Ekrund
When the Dwarfs began reclaiming Ekrund, Varell joined them. Recovering the clan’s first homeland gave the work profound personal meaning after generations of exile and accumulated grievances. As a venerable Runepriest, he could contribute to the restoration of ancestral religious sites, the preservation and recovery of runic knowledge, and the protection of the resettlement.
He remained in the recovered hold. The renewed assault threatens a home he has helped return to Dwarf hands, while Greenskin successes at Karak Eight Peaks recall another chapter of Helhein’s displacement. That history strengthens his resolve to prevent Ekrund from being lost again.
Appearance
Varell’s enormous silver-grey beard is extensively gathered and braided. Fully unbound, it extends well beyond the floor; its elaborate arrangement conceals much of that natural length. The beard makes his great age visible even before his standing among the Dawi is known.
Relationships
Orenne also participated in the reclamation and remained for the reconstruction. Their work places them in the same resettlement, although their attachments to Ekrund have different origins: Varell has returned to an ancestral home, while Orenne has invested himself in its rebuilding.
