Overview
Itsi Toggletorque, usually called Ittybitty, is a gnomish frostfire mage, former adjutant of the Gnomeregan R.A.N.G.E.R.S. Corps, and Fittz Toggletorque’s twin sister. She is a formidable elemental mage who spent much of her adult life believing that her real value lay behind a desk rather than in a fight. Reserved, cautious, and much happier in predictable surroundings, Itsi became a field mage only after the fall of Gnomeregan destroyed the ordered life that had allowed her to stay out of danger.
At roughly two and a half centuries old in the modern era, Itsi has lived a long and capable adult life without being physically elderly by gnomish standards. Her strength is not bravado. It is careful competence, loyalty to people she trusts, and the willingness to keep working when the world has made safety impossible.
A Lost Twin
Itsi and Fittz were born in Gnomeregan but separated in infancy. She grew up as an orphan without a family name she regarded as her own. Her early adulthood took her to Dalaran for formal magical education, where she proved unusually talented in elemental magic. She had a particular instinct for combining forces that other mages treated as opposed or disruptive, drawing them together in controlled, inventive patterns. Frost and fire became the clearest expression of that gift.
Her Dalaran education belonged to the beginning of her adult life, not to her later reunion with Fittz. At that stage she had not settled on a vocation. Although she understood that she had real magical ability, she had little taste for battle and no desire to become an adventurer. As she matured, she found that she preferred structured, predictable institutional work. She returned to Gnomeregan and built a life around administration, reliability, organization, and service.
Late in their first century, Itsi and Fittz found one another and learned that they were twins. The discovery did not restore their childhood, but it became a durable adult bond. Over the following years, Toggletorque slowly changed from a fact about her birth into a name that belonged to her. She adopted it gradually, as her relationship with Fittz and the family connection became a genuine part of her identity. By the fall of Gnomeregan, the twins had known one another for well over a century, and Fittz had become one of the most stable constants in Itsi’s life.
The Corps Adjutant
Itsi’s pre-fall life was independent but narrow. Her days were work, home, ordinary necessities, rest, and the next day’s responsibilities. She had little social life outside what was necessary and did not see herself as adventurous, socially gifted, brave, or suited to remote work. She believed her administrative competence was the way she could be most useful.
That conviction made her an ideal adjutant for Corvo Cogblast’s R.A.N.G.E.R.S. Corps. Corvo and his active rangers were autonomous field officers who might be absent for long periods and forced to act without ordinary support. Itsi supplied the institutional structure that kept them an actual corps rather than a collection of capable wanderers. She managed personnel, records, communications, requisitions, supplies, reserve activation, check-ins, jurisdictional questions, reporting, recovery support, and coordination with other authorities.
Itsi was already a talented mage, but she had no interest in becoming a ranger or following Corvo into the field. The office was where she believed she belonged. Corvo respected that judgment completely. Their professional relationship rested on complementary competence: Itsi trusted his decisions in dangerous conditions, and Corvo trusted her authority over the administrative work that made his officers viable. He rarely interfered in matters that belonged to her sphere.
The Fall of Gnomeregan
When Gnomeregan fell during the Third War, Itsi remained at the corps coordination post. She did not become a frontline soldier. Communications, evacuation coordination, personnel tracking, and recovery still depended on the systems under her care, and her desk was the place from which she could continue saving people.
The catastrophe destroyed the original corps. An emergency blast door cut Corvo off from the rangers in the field, leaving him physically unable to reach them before they died. Afterward he went for Itsi. He got her out alive, but not before severe irradiation transformed her into a leper gnome. Corvo and Itsi were the two surviving figures of the original corps.
The disaster took more from Itsi than her health. It erased the safe home, stable workplace, clear responsibilities, familiar surroundings, and institutional routine on which she had built her adult life. She was not made fearless by the loss. Instead, she was forced into a world she had never wanted to navigate.
Dalaran and the Field
After the fall, Itsi returned to Dalaran and remained close to Fittz. The city was familiar from her education, but her brother was the real reason for the choice. With her old administrative role gone and her body altered by radiation, he was the person she trusted most. Fittz became her default personal anchor as he worked to help stabilize her and find a path toward restoration.
If Fittz was absent and danger found her in Corvo’s presence, Itsi naturally stayed close to Corvo. Her years as his adjutant had taught her that he understood a dangerous situation and could get people through it alive. That trust never replaced her attachment to Fittz; it was the practical confidence of someone who knew what Corvo could do in the field.
By the Argent Tournament, Itsi had been cured or stabilized enough that she no longer appeared as a visibly irradiated leper gnome. The exact treatment and timing remain tied to the wider recovery of Gnomeregan’s irradiated survivors. The experience did not make her adventurous. It taught her that no desk, city, or supposedly safe place could always keep danger away, particularly while Fittz and Dalaran themselves were repeatedly drawn into war.
Itsi began accompanying Fittz reluctantly. Her limitation was never magical ability. Her elemental talent, long dismissed as irrelevant to the kind of life she wanted, became indispensable whenever survival demanded it. In battle she developed the frostfire style that had always been latent in her training, combining fire and frost into a single disciplined destructive art. She remained cautious, uncomfortable with danger, and poorly suited by temperament to unsupported work, but she gradually accepted that she could contribute rather than merely be protected.
Argent Tournament
Fittz entered the Argent Tournament as one of Gnomeregan’s obvious magical representatives and refused to participate unless Itsi entered with him. He knew she was more capable than she believed and wanted her to confront the limits she had placed upon herself. Itsi agreed reluctantly.
Whenever the format permitted it, the twins worked as a pair. Their familiarity and complementary magic made them extremely effective, and Itsi was far more comfortable with Fittz near her. The Tournament also repeatedly forced her to act without him: in individual events, temporary groups, and competitions where the two could not remain together. She performed well, but spent much of the campaign persuading herself that she had only advanced on her brother’s coattails.
Both rose through the Tournament pathway to the Faction Champions encounter. After Anub’arak’s defeat, recognition from Tirion Fordring and the Argent leadership made a difference that Fittz’s encouragement alone could not. Itsi could dismiss her brother’s confidence as affection. She could not as easily dismiss the judgment of people who had watched her stand among the strongest champions in Icecrown. She began to accept that she had genuine field capability. Fittz’s only answer was a knowing look that said he had expected this all along.
The Tournament did not turn Itsi into a fearless adventurer. It changed her estimate of herself. She became more willing to accompany Fittz on dangerous work, still preferring familiar people and safer plans, but no longer convinced that she was only an administrator forced into situations beyond her ability.
