Overview
The Gnomeregan Remote Area Navigation, General Enforcement, Response & Support Corps, commonly called the Gnomeregan R.A.N.G.E.R.S. Corps or simply the R.A.N.G.E.R.S., was a small body of commissioned gnomish officers created for work beyond ordinary support networks. Founded by Corvo Cogblast after the Second War, the corps answered the practical problem of a distant gnomish emergency that could require investigation, engineering, navigation, law enforcement, rescue, combat, technical support, or diplomacy before a full specialist team could arrive.
A ranger’s mandate concerned gnomish people, technology, interests, responsibilities, expeditions, and emergencies. Rangers were not merely soldiers, scouts, engineers, or peace officers. They were trained generalists expected to understand the objective, use broad field judgment, and begin resolving the problem at hand without waiting for someone else to supply every missing specialty.
Organization and Culture
The corps was deliberately small. Most commissioned officers were reservists who kept ordinary careers in gnomish society while maintaining full R.A.N.G.E.R.S. commissions. A handful of active rangers ranged across the continent for weeks or months at a time, supporting isolated citizens and expeditions, checking distant interests, investigating threats, recovering equipment, and acting when circumstances demanded it.
A full-time officer held the title Commissioned Officer, Gnomeregan R.A.N.G.E.R.S. Corps. A reservist held the title Commissioned Officer, Reserve, Gnomeregan R.A.N.G.E.R.S. Corps. The distinction concerned whether corps duty was their full-time occupation, not the quality of their training or authority.
The corps developed a frontier reputation within gnomish society. Its rangers’ practical coats, heavy firearms, engineering tools, ammunition, mechanical companions, and willingness to travel unsupported could appear almost theatrical to larger peoples until the work began. Their culture rested on real competence: an officer who could repair a machine, follow a trail, assess a crime, survive a hostile route, and use force responsibly without making a distant situation worse.
Itsi Toggletorque served as the corps’ adjutant in Gnomeregan, maintaining its records, requisitions, budgets, supplies, communications, check-ins, reserve activation, jurisdictional questions, and recovery coordination. Itsi was not a field ranger, but her administrative competence made the corps a legitimate institution rather than a loose collection of armed travelers. Corvo treated that distinction as a matter of expertise, not hierarchy.
Fall and Renewal
During the trogg invasion of Gnomeregan in the Third War, the corps returned to defend its city. The original corps was destroyed during the fall. Corvo alone survived the field organization after an emergency blast door cut him off from the rest of his command, while Itsi survived severe irradiation after Corvo extracted her from a central coordination post.
In the displaced years that followed, the corps ceased to function formally. Corvo nevertheless preserved its work through scouting, recovery, survivor searches, technical support, and independent service to displaced gnomes. As Gnomeregan’s institutions recovered, and units such as Gnomeregan Covert Ops showed that specialized operations could again be maintained, he began rebuilding the ranger tradition.
By the Fourth War, that tradition had evolved into the more militarized and aviation-centered Gnomish Elite Aerial Rangers, or G.E.A.R. G.E.A.R. inherited the corps’ emphasis on mobility, reconnaissance, engineering, discretion, field judgment, and unsupported operations, while narrowing its purpose toward elite aerial and military work.
