Overview

Fittz Toggletorque is a middle-aged gnome mage from Gnomeregan, master enchanter, pioneer of modern stable telemancy, former professor and senior Archmage of the Kirin Tor, high-ranking member of the reformed Tirisgarde, and senior adviser within Morrivar Company. Lighthearted but never frivolous, he is eccentric, brilliant, and dangerous when required. Most modern knowledge of repeatable teleportation, stable portals, destination anchoring, and permanent translocation infrastructure descends directly or indirectly from his work.

Gnomeregan and the Enchanted Coin

Fittz was born in Gnomeregan to common folk, the son of a jeweler. From his father he inherited an eye for small mechanisms, precious metalwork, and the possibility that an insignificant object might conceal something remarkable. Before Fittz left for magical study in Dalaran, his father set a mana gem into an ancient gnomish coin with a square hole through its center and gave it to him as a keepsake.

The coin became an experiment, then many experiments. Over decades and more than a century, Fittz layered enchantment upon enchantment until it became sentimental, whimsical, useful, and hazardous in equal measure. By flipping it and channeling magic through it, he can awaken one of the coin’s many buried effects. He can influence the result but never entirely control it. One function can be invoked reliably: the coin expands into a hovering platform capable of carrying him swiftly across long distances. He uses it as a personal conveyance, not a substitute for portals, airships, flight masters, or ordinary judgment.

Fittz and his twin sister Itsi were separated in infancy and raised apart. They found one another late in their first century of life, early enough to build a deeply settled relationship over more than a century before Gnomeregan fell. Itsi gradually reclaimed the name Toggletorque after their reunion; Fittz became one of the fixed points of a life that had begun in orphanhood.

By the fall of Gnomeregan, Fittz had long been living in Dalaran. The city was no longer his immediate home, but Itsi was inside it as the adjutant of Corvo Cogblast’s R.A.N.G.E.R.S. Corps. When she returned severely irradiated after Corvo got her out, the disaster became a personal crisis rather than only the loss of Fittz’s homeland. Fittz devoted himself to her survival, stabilization, and eventual restoration. Dalaran, the Kirin Tor, scholarship, and adventure had long become his home, and he made it the place where his sister could recover.

Dalaran and Telemancy

In Dalaran, Fittz became a professor, a beloved eccentric, and eventually a respected institution. His specialty was teleportation. His lectures could wander and his demonstrations could become alarming, but his understanding of distance, position, momentum, and magical displacement was exact. He could make difficult principles teachable, then build them into techniques other trained mages could reproduce and maintain.

Earlier traditions had already achieved extraordinary things. Hearthstones proved that an artifact could return a traveler reliably to one fixed destination, while High Elven translocation orbs demonstrated shared paired infrastructure. Fittz studied both, drew upon their strengths, and surpassed their limits. His work established safer anchoring, calibration, maintenance, shutdown, interdiction, modular portal construction, and networks that could carry travelers across continents, worlds, and planes. He remains one of the world’s foremost personal teleporters, especially when an extraction or temporary portal must be improvised under dangerous conditions.

Magic and Temperament

As a younger mage, Fittz fought with close-range arcane chaos: appearing in the middle of a fight, unleashing a sudden burst of force, and vanishing before an enemy could answer. In the war against the Lich King, airship crews saw him step cheerfully from a deck, disappear in midair, and reappear among the undead below as arcane explosions tore through their ranks. Later, he developed spells that built unstable entropic pressure in a target and the surrounding field before collapsing it in a further burst of destructive force.

For all his levity, Fittz is not careless. He can be serious and pensive, especially over lost students, ruined cities, and the burden of outliving so much. He simply refuses to make solemnity his only answer. A smile can steady an apprentice, irritate a pompous archmage, or make an enemy underestimate him at the worst possible moment.

Later Service

Fittz fought in Icecrown beside Cairden, Aibhinger, Mourgrim, and other champions against the Lich King. The war forged an enduring friendship between Fittz, Cairden, and Aibh: different men who had seen enough of one another under impossible pressure to trust the character beneath the reputation.

He later traveled to Pandaria with the Alliance and fought in the Siege of Orgrimmar. During the Third Invasion of the Burning Legion, he rose further within the Kirin Tor and served as a senior adviser and field authority within the re-formed Tirisgarde under Rhox. When Cairden founded Morrivar Company, Fittz joined immediately. He became an archmage adviser and architect of its arcane logistics, helping build the portal systems and magical infrastructure that allow the Company to move, communicate, and survive as a lasting military organization.

Fittz rarely enters the field without serious need, but those who mistake him for a harmless academic learn quickly that his cheer and his danger have never been opposites.

Relationships

  • Cairden - old friend, reason Fittz joined Morrivar Company
  • Aibhinger - old friend, fellow founder
  • Mourgrim - fellow champion, ally
  • Ittybitty - twin sister, recovered in adulthood after their childhood separation; Fittz’s closest surviving family and frequent field companion

  • Entered the Argent Tournament only after insisting that Itsi enter alongside him; their performance there helped her recognize her own field capability.
  • Traveled to Pandaria with Aibhinger and the forces of Operation: Shieldwall, helping as an independent allied champion rather than as one of High Marshal Twinbraid’s officers.
  • Met Yurric during this period, likely through Aibhinger, and later accompanied him through selected portions of Yurric’s Pandaria journey.

  • Attained the rank of Archmage within the Kirin Tor.
  • Joined Morrivar Company immediately after Cairden founded it.
  • Helped design Morrivar Company’s portal systems and arcane logistics.

Telemancy

Fittz’s strongest magic is telemancy: destination anchoring, portal calibration, repeatable activation, modular portal structures, traveler protection, distributed power loads, permanent and semipermanent networks, safe collapse systems, and interdiction against hostile redirection or interception. He is also one of the world’s foremost personal teleporters and excels at improvised temporary portals under dangerous conditions.

His broader arcane skill is uneven. He is highly capable in summoning, conjuration, general arcane theory, enchantment, and adjacent spatial magic, but elemental magic is a genuine weakness. His direct fire, frost, water, air, and similar elemental manipulations are weak, crude, inefficient, unstable, or embarrassing beside his telemantic mastery.

Hooks

  • His enchanted coin can produce unpredictable magical effects.
  • Yu’lon’s blessing deepens the coin’s potential without making its results perfectly controllable.
  • His work underlies major modern portal infrastructure, including Stormwind’s portal room, Dalaran’s portal systems, Draenor garrison links, and later systems derived from his methods.
  • Horde portal infrastructure built without his direct participation still inherits part of his influence through older Kirin Tor practice, Sunreaver knowledge, and Oculeth’s later adaptations.
  • Can influence the coin’s results, but not perfectly.
  • Can reliably expand the coin into a high-speed hovering platform.
  • Rarely enters the field in later years, but remains devastating when he does.
  • Uses cheer as courtesy, defiance, and tactics.
  • Carries grief for Gnomeregan without letting it define him.

Notes

  • Fittz stands in for Noozle Whizzlestick during the Argent Tournament.
