Overview
Morton Dreadmoore, later known as Morrivar, was the eldest son of House Dreadmoore of Gilneas. A warlock trained in the family’s vitality-draining and pox-giving arts, demonic bindings, and quiet older rites, he was raised to inherit the barony. That inheritance was a lie. The old Baron Dreadmoore had prolonged his own life for generations through stolen Morrivar magic and the sacrifice of his eldest heirs.
House Dreadmoore
Morton grew up in a house built around a promise that was never meant to be kept. He was trained as an heir and warlock while the Baron prepared to consume the life that had been shaped for him. Aidan, his younger brother, discovered enough of the Baron’s theft to sabotage the curse at the center of the continuance rite. Morton independently sought to take that rite for himself, not knowing Aidan had already compromised it.
In 18 ADP, the collision of those plans killed Morton in a Morrivar crypt in the Kingdom of Lordaeron. The Baron was broken or killed, but the family survived the immediate catastrophe only to inherit its consequences.
The Name Morrivar
Morton rose as Forsaken in Tirisfal with no memory except the name Morrivar. He took it as his own before he knew it belonged to the family whose magic had destroyed him. His imp knew more, but the restored demonic binding made it a resentful servant rather than a useful witness.
Even after learning that he had been Morton Dreadmoore, he kept the name. Morrivar had become more than a mistaken identity. It was the name under which he had awakened, survived, and begun to choose a life separate from the role House Dreadmoore had prepared for him.
Early Forsaken Service
Morrivar’s first years among the Forsaken were defined by work before they were defined by recovered history. He adventured through Lordaeron while still lacking any reliable account of his own past, taking assignments and gathering fragments without knowing what his former life had been. During this period he was manipulated into implicating the young Horde soldier Agoro in the murder of a visiting tauren dignitary. Morrivar did not yet understand who he had been or how easily his uncertainty could be used against someone else. The incident became an early moral shock, showing him the harm he could cause when he acted without knowing who was directing him.
For part of this period, Morrivar adventured beside Carsybe, a slightly more senior Forsaken warlock who was already more established in undead life. Carsybe was a comrade and partner rather than an authority who could resolve Morrivar’s identity for him. Their positions were superficially similar, but their lives later diverged sharply: Morrivar gradually recovered his identity and became entangled again with Gilneas, House Dreadmoore, repeated death, and Revendreth, while Carsybe remained closer to the classic Forsaken warlock archetype before his later corruption and hidden allegiances.
Near Hearthglen, Morrivar encountered a Scarlet Crusader who bore the name Morrivar by blood. The encounter worsened his identity crisis by making clear that the name he carried belonged to someone else’s living history as well as to the noble house whose magic had destroyed him.
Gilneas and Revendreth
By 26 ADP, the fragments of Morrivar’s past had led him back to the Dreadmoore Estate inside the Greymane Wall. He had recovered enough of his identity to return to the family home, but he remained the Forsaken person he had become under the name Morrivar. From 26 ADP to 28 ADP, he lived with Aidan on the polite edges of Gilnean society. Their relationship contained relief, guilt, resentment, and obligation rather than a restoration of the life they had shared before Morton’s death.
When the Invasion of Gilneas began in 28 ADP, Morrivar helped defend Gilneas against the Forsaken. His presence as a visible undead man deepened suspicion toward the already distrusted Dreadmoores, even when his service was real. The defense did not restore him to the life of a living nobleman, and it could not separate House Dreadmoore from the fear his existence represented. When Gilneas departed, the Dreadmoores remained behind, and Morrivar remained tied to the house rather than leaving with the exodus.
After a later death, Morrivar was found in Revendreth during the War Against the Jailer and returned again afterward. That second return intensified Aidan’s resentment and left Morrivar still more estranged from the life he had once been expected to inherit.
