Overview
Aibhinger Auriksson is an Ironbreaker of Clan Ironhammer from Karak Azul, the Iron Peak. An experienced defender of the hold, he is accustomed to guarding vulnerable passages and holding battle lines under punishment that would overwhelm lesser warriors. He joins the reinforcements sent to Ekrund against the renewed Greenskin offensive, accompanied by his longstanding friend Yurric.
Personality
Aibhinger’s strength lies in endurance and the stubborn refusal to give ground. He is most at home between danger and those he protects, remaining on his feet after an enemy expects the line to break. His loyalty has the same persistence.
The betrayal that killed Yurric’s Thane is one of his greatest personal grudges. He accepts his friend’s responsibility for failing to preserve the life entrusted to him, but places the principal blame upon the rival Dwarf noble who engineered that failure. He wants justice for the treachery that made Yurric’s terrible sacrifice necessary.
He fully affirms the Slayer Oath and believes he would have sworn it in Yurric’s place. That conviction does not diminish his grief. He mourns his friend every day, knowing that the worthy death Yurric seeks will eventually separate them. Redemption is something he can sincerely wish for while desperately wanting more time together. Should Yurric attain it, honour and profound personal loss would accompany one another.
History and Relationships
Karak Azul
Aibhinger is the son of Aurik and belongs to a different branch of Ironhammer from Yurric, whose father is Garni. They are not close blood relatives. Their friendship grew in Karak Azul before the events that disgraced Yurric, while Aibhinger followed the Ironbreaker’s calling and his friend distinguished himself as a Hammerer.
Yurric’s Oath
Aibhinger was present when Yurric swore the Slayer Oath almost immediately after his Thane’s death. He understood the decision and made no attempt to prevent it. With leave from his military duties, he accompanied the subsequent pilgrimage to Karak Kadrin, wanting his friend to survive the journey and enter his calling with the dignity of completing the customary rites.
Their friendship endured afterward. The conspirator’s exposure and escape to the Border Princes left Aibhinger’s grudge unsettled, while Yurric began wandering in pursuit of an honourable death.
Ekrund
When Karak Azul dispatched him to Ekrund, Aibhinger sent word to Yurric at Karak Kadrin. His invitation promised fierce fighting, formidable enemies, and opportunities for a Slayer to fulfil his oath. He meant the promise, but also wanted the simpler comfort of his old friend’s company. Yurric accepted, and they travelled into the campaign together.
Aibhinger continues to defend him in battle. An honourable death must be earned through genuine combat, and a Slayer’s companions need not stand aside before a surprise attack or an overwhelming press of enemies. He would instinctively intercept an unexpected blow or come to Yurric’s aid. When forced to choose, civilians generally take precedence over military personnel, and non-Slayers over Slayers, but those priorities do not erase his friend’s claim upon his protection.
