Overview
Yurric Garnisson is a Slayer of Clan Ironhammer, born in Karak Azul and formerly a Hammerer among the hold’s elite warriors. The death of the Thane he had sworn to protect drove him to take the Slayer Oath. He now wanders in search of enemies against whom he can earn an honourable death.
Personality
Yurric bears his disgrace with stoicism and a severe understanding of duty. Oaths and grudges have enormous weight for him, and continued survival calls for greater trials. His discipline and exceptional martial skill were acquired before he became a Slayer, through service that demanded courage, loyalty, and experience.
He seeks death without surrendering the obligation to fight well. The endurance and effectiveness of a seasoned Hammerer remain beneath the violence of his new calling.
History
The Thane’s Death
Yurric, the son of Garni, served as a Thane’s personal guard. A rival Dwarf noble arranged an ambush in a secluded underground passage believed to be secure, using superior numbers and carefully prepared circumstances to overwhelm the lord and his protector.
Yurric fought desperately to defend his charge. The struggle briefly separated him from the Thane; by the time he fought his way back, his lord was dead. He had neither fled nor abandoned him, but when the fighting ended he remained alive after the death of the man he had sworn to protect. That failure was intolerable to him.
The conspirator came close to escaping suspicion. After his scheme was exposed, he fled Karak Azul before justice could be carried out and settled in the territory of a Dwarf Border Prince. The ruler refused to enforce another hold’s judgment merely because its authorities demanded it. His refusal rested upon his own jurisdiction, rather than approval of the crime or active protection of the fugitive, but left the traitor beyond Karak Azul’s immediate reach.
Oath and Pilgrimage
Yurric swore the Slayer Oath almost immediately after the tragedy, in Aibhinger’s presence. His friend understood and affirmed the choice.
The subsequent pilgrimage took him to the great Shrine of Grimnir at Karak Kadrin for solemnization and the traditional observances of his calling. Aibhinger obtained leave to accompany him, helping ensure that he survived the journey to complete those rites. Yurric entered the pilgrimage already bound by the oath he had sworn.
The Slayer Keep and Ekrund
Afterward, Yurric wandered against formidable enemies. Between expeditions he increasingly returned to Karak Kadrin, finding the company of other Slayers and contributing to the hold’s defense. The Slayer Keep became a recurring refuge and base for his journeys.
Aibhinger’s invitation reached him there when reinforcements were being sent to Ekrund. The renewed Greenskin offensive offered fighting worthy of a Slayer, and Yurric joined his friend in the campaign.
Relationships
Yurric and Aibhinger come from separate Ironhammer branches and belong to approximately the same generation. Their close friendship predates the disgrace and has survived both the oath and the pilgrimage. Yurric retains his clan ancestry through his new calling, as well as the bond with the friend who accompanied him into it.
