Overview
The destruction of Bael’dun Keep was the Cataclysm-era explosion that shattered the fortress securing Bael Modan in the Southern Barrens. The assault grew from Gann Stonespire’s vengeance against the Bael’dun expedition, whose occupation and excavations had displaced his people. Gann had broken from formal Horde command, but his movement remained Horde-aligned. He recruited Gellix and the goblin saboteur Weezil Slipshadow, both voluntary Bilgewater-aligned Horde participants, to infiltrate the keep and sabotage its artillery shell. Gellix escaped before the detonation. Weezil did not, and Alliance forces later found his body in the ruins.
Cogblast had been sent by General Twinbraid to check on Marley Twinbraid and the excavation. He escorted Marley in a separate flying machine when the blast occurred, barely kept his own craft aloft, and watched Marley’s aircraft fall. Corvo could not save Marley, but helped rescue other surviving dwarves before returning to Twinbraid with his report.
Twinbraid correctly understood that a goblin had been involved. He wrongly concluded that the nearby Bilgewater operation at the Frazzlecraz Motherlode was responsible. The mine had no role in Gann’s sabotage, but it was a legitimate Horde industrial target. Tinks later joined Corvo in Twinbraid’s retaliation because both men regarded it as a valid wartime strike; the suspected Bael’dun connection explained the speed and scale of the reprisal rather than its basic legitimacy. Their different understanding of the sabotage and Gellix’s later anger at the mine’s destruction helped turn an existing gnome-and-goblin rivalry into a personal enmity.
The attack and retaliation were a tragically misaligned rogue operation inside an already active factional war. Gellix condemned the gnomes for killing unrelated people from his side. Corvo and Tinks condemned him for helping a Horde-linked operation destroy their dwarven allies. None of them later treated their own side’s actions as an accidental moral revelation; they understood the cycle as the ordinary, brutal logic of war.
Monli led the displaced Bael Modan community toward Theramore under Aibhinger’s military protection. Corvo and Tinks instead answered New Thalanaar’s emergency and traveled into Thousand Needles through Fizzle & Pozzik’s Speedbarge.
