Overview
Zayla is an early-generation dracthyr evoker, a member of Morrivar Company, and part of Emberwake. She belongs to roughly Vathor’s generation: younger than Vandryk’s firstborn cohort, but old enough to have trained and served for a substantial time before the creches were sealed.
Stasis and Emberwake
Zayla remained in stasis until Dragonflight. She may remember Vathor from their original era, but she does not share the nearly twenty thousand years he lived after escaping confinement. In the modern world she finds a lasting unit in Emberwake, where Vandryk commands in the field and Vathor serves as the unit’s senior patron.
Saerina
Zayla approached Saerina with curiosity rather than disgust or political suspicion. Their bond grew partly from the ways both had been remade for another’s purpose: Zayla was created as a dracthyr soldier and lost an age to magical stasis, while Saerina was remade by death and later altered into a weapon for Sylvanas. Saerina became a guide to the modern world and quietly protective of Zayla’s relative youth; Zayla refused to mistake muted feeling for an absence of feeling. They became sisters in all but blood.
The Search for a Cure
Because she loved Saerina and saw what Cairden and Saerina were losing, Zayla initially believed Saerina might be restored. Azeroth has known souls recovered, bodies restored, and transformations survived that once appeared final. Saerina eventually allowed the search to proceed, and Cairden supported it, but no method they found could restore her without risking destruction, replacement, or a change so profound that she would no longer be Saerina. That failure did not prove that restoration is impossible in every conceivable circumstance; it proved that no acceptable path was available to them.
Cairden and Saerina
Zayla was present through much or all of Cairden and Saerina’s relationship, never as an early rival but as someone who wanted them to succeed. She witnessed their love, the hope raised by the search, and the recognition that love could not reverse Saerina’s death. Only after they ceased being lovers did Zayla’s feeling for Cairden become distinctly romantic. Its outcome remains open, and it cannot be understood as a replacement for what Cairden and Saerina had.

Hooks
- Preserve Zayla’s broader personality and theology as open.
- Dracthyr lifespan is not precisely established; the working assumption is that Zayla can remain present across centuries unless later revised.
- Define what Zayla remembers of Vathor from before confinement.
- Define what records, letters, objects, or accounts Zayla preserves from the failed search to restore Saerina.
- Her love for Saerina should remain familial and independent of Cairden.
- Any romance with Cairden must grow after his relationship with Saerina ends, not replace Saerina immediately.
- Decide whether Zayla and Cairden ever become permanent partners or marry; this remains unresolved.
- Zayla can accept Saerina’s continued place as Cairden’s dedicated subordinate because she loves them both and knows what created the bond.
