Overview

Caldyris Grimblade is a veteran of the Black Guard of Naggarond and a senior member of the Tower of Wrath. He has served Malekith for nearly 170 years, earning a reputation for the ruthless efficiency commemorated in his Name of Power. During the invasion of Ulthuan, he commands an elite squad assembled aboard the Black Ark Nemesis, with Lynara, Praedys, and Saerina among its members.

Personality

Caldyris is severe and disciplined, with the intimidating bearing of a warrior accustomed to imposing his will through force. He values martial dominance and pursues it with relentless pressure, bringing the same ruthlessness to command that earned him the name Grimblade.

His ambition has survived almost two centuries of service. With about thirty years left before completing his obligation, Malekith’s promised rewards are close enough to contemplate seriously. Wealth, estates, and prestige offer him the means to increase his influence in Druchii society, and he intends to use them to secure greater military and political authority. His loyalty to the Witch King is sincere; the future he wants is that of a more powerful servant.

That prospect has begun to affect how he judges danger. He remains an aggressive warrior willing to fulfil his duties, but has increasing reason to weigh what a risk will accomplish. Necessary hazards are part of service. Pointless ones can cost him the future toward which he has worked for so long.

History

The Black Guard

Caldyris knows his ancestral lineage, but the Dragon Oath severed his allegiance to his birth family. His loyalties now rest with Malekith and the Black Guard, and his ambitions have grown within that service.

Nearly 170 years of campaigning have made him a battle-hardened veteran with considerable authority in the Tower of Wrath. He serves below its Tower Master. Grimblade is an earned designation, attached to his reputation and accomplishments rather than inherited from his family.

The Ulthuan Campaign

Caldyris arrives aboard the Nemesis specifically to take command of a newly assembled squad of approximately twelve Druchii. The force brings together specialists capable of operating independently: reconnaissance, infiltration, sabotage, raids, targeted killings, intelligence gathering, recovery operations, and attacks on strategically valuable targets all fall within its intended duties. The invasion is the occasion for their assembly, rather than another campaign in the history of a longstanding unit.

He is responsible for the squad’s operations. His seniority and delegated military authority also allow him to direct additional forces when they are assigned to him, whether as reinforcements, temporary attachments, or participants in a joint operation. Such authority comes through Malekith’s military establishment and the responsibilities entrusted to him.

Relationships

Lynara’s attachment was arranged by superiors of the Tower of Wrath and the Dark Convent. Neither she nor Caldyris took part in the negotiations, and neither has much interest in the agreement’s finer terms. He directs operations; she supplies sorcerous expertise while retaining the standing, discretion, and obligations of a Convent Sorceress. Their association begins on that professional footing.

Praedys and Saerina receive orders from their Khainite superiors to support his mission. They operate under his tactical leadership while continuing to answer to their religious institutions.

Appearance and Equipment

Caldyris wears elaborate blackened plate armor ornamented in brass-gold, with dark burgundy or purple fabric beneath and between the plates. He carries a large, ornate two-handed Druchii halberd, the traditional weapon of the Black Guard.
